Founding of City

| At this site, the City of Guadalajara, was definitively founded in February 1542. This sculptural relief, created by Raphael Zamarripa, recalls the foundation ceremony. Headed by Christopher Onate, who accompanied the conquerors, Irdios and Frailes. |

Plaza de ArmasThe historic centre of Guadalajara is full of public squares with many fountains and statues enriching the lives of the city's people. The picture on the right shows the Plaza de Armas in front of the Metropolitan Cathedral of Guadalajara, with the famous bandshell that is supported by eight nymphs, two of whom are used as bookends in the title arrangement at the top of this page. |
Rotunda de los IlustrosGuadalajara and the state of Jalisco are very proud of their native sons and they have commemorated them with another square. The center of this square features a giant ring supported by columns. All around this square are statues of those native sons who have contributed to Guadalajara, to the state of Jalisco and indeed to the whole of the Republic of Mexico. |

Jose Clemente OrozcoJose Clemente Orozco is a muralist of Guadalajara who has his works placed across the entire country and even in New York City (Museum of Modern Art), and rates in the same catagory as Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros. His statue is one of those placed around the Rotunda de los Ilustros shown above. |
Teatro DegolladoThe Teatro Degollado is the center of the arts in many ways. It is home to the Sinfonia Orquestra de Guadalajara, a collection of fine art and the Opera de Guadalajara. You can see the glass roof over the main theater from this view of the roof. The theater is named after Santos Degollado, a military man and politician, who participated in the Revolution of Ayutla and served under president Benito Juarez as Minister of War and of the Navy. |
